The BNP won a council seat in a bye election in Swanley on Thursday, in a previously “safe” Labour ward.
Following various blogs as I do, I have been genuinely shocked and concerned by the tone of some of the comments that I’ve read. See the comment made at 12:00pm on 20th Febuary to this posting in Iain Dale's Diary:
“These working class bigots are not people the Tory party should be chasing”
This from a person who elsewhere in the comments claims to be a Conservative Party activist!
First; to my mind, if the Conservative Party doesn’t speak for all of us, it speaks for none of us.
Second; to dismiss a large section of the white working class as “bigots” is to totally miss the point. Here is a section of society which feels that none of the major parties is standing up for them. Whatever your view of the BNP might be, the fact is that they are promoting a simple, clear message.
So where’s the Conservative Party? Who is setting out to reject and refute BNP propaganda? Who is vigorously defending Christian, western, enlightened values? I don’t actually know what Conservative policy is on most issues. If I, a party member with an interest in politics “don’t get it”, what are we to expect from the disinterested and the uninterested?
The BNP and militant Islam are serious threats to our way of life, and I’m waiting for the party to get on the front foot and lead the fight back.
Frankly, scoring points at Prime Minister’s Questions ain’t worth a bucket of warm spit.

Who is speaking up for me?
I don't recall a time when I've been so depressed by the state of my country.
I watched the Prime Minister on PMQs yesterday and listened to him on the radio today. I listened to Miliband on the radio trying to justify the exclusion of Geert Wilders. Jacqui Smith has been caught with her nose in the trough.
Has there ever been a time when the three great offices of state have been occupied by such shallow, worthless individuals?
And who does the BBC field to speak about Geert Wilders? Lord Ahmed and Keith Vaz! Now there's impartiality for you!
Who is speaking up for Western, Christian civilisation?
Where's the bloody Conservative Party?
